Stubs

Print the line, not the vibe

Mara EllisonMara Ellison7 min

A customer who cannot reconstruct an invoice will not pay it on time. They will open a ticket. They will ask for a spreadsheet. They will guess.

Scrip treats that as a defect in the document, not a defect in the customer.

What a line is

A stub is four numbers and a name:

  1. Quantity
  2. Unit
  3. Rate
  4. Amount

If you cannot point to those four on paper, you do not have a line. You have a summary. Summaries belong in a cover letter, not in the body of an invoice.

Why dashboards fail finance

Product teams like charts. Finance teams like periods. A chart can hide a rounding rule, an inactive seat, or a free-tier exemption. A stub cannot. That is the point.

When we print a period, we print the rule next to the number. Banker's rounding is a sentence, not a surprise.

The audit test

Hand the invoice to someone who does not work at your company. Ask them to recompute one stub with a calculator. If they need a login, the document failed.

That is the test we run before a book can close.
